I said on September 4 that AI game development would become a point of contention in major gaming companies’ shareholder calls by early 2027.
Epic is currently attempting to vindicate my prediction with a pretty serious test.
Bloomberg now reports that developers on Epic’s upcoming Marvel/Star Wars shooter were told “No more hand-written code,” with all art to be “generated with full AI workflows.” They’re using tools like Claude, with humans directing the production.
Meanwhile, on Gamehaus’s September 8 earnings call, management said its AI pipeline could produce a complete casual game with relatively simple mechanics in about a week.
Embracer was still telling shareholders on September 24 that “AI is the copilot, not the pilot,” emphasizing that human teams retain creative control. I smell a little fear in that reassurance - eventually tasteful AI will subsume majority of the production work.
