This week I made a Midtown Madness-style driving game set in Chicago for my other daughter, who doesn’t like the shooting ones as much.
Claude handled the frontend and design, ChatGPT the backend, performance and multiplayer, ElevenLabs the music and SFX, and Tripo the car models.
The hard part was Chicago. A single-level map is easy, but Chicago has levels: tunnels, ramps, overpasses, Lower Wacker, and drawbridges you can jump.
The map is all open data: OpenStreetMap for streets and footprints, LiDAR building heights (USGS, via Overture), and City of Chicago floor counts, checked against aerial imagery and Street View.
There are cops with roadblocks and a spotter helicopter, and yes, the new Tesla Roadster is in there.
I also put a lot of effort into making it look good on a decent computer while still adapting down to a $200 Chromebook, so the 3d models are tweaked for that and to conserve some bandwidth and loading times.
It’s not 100% glitch-free or accurate, but it’s close, and my kids are happy with it.
