The barrier to developing games keeps dropping. Anyone can spin up a casual game in a fraction of the time it used to take. The tooling is cheaper and easy to use for newbies.

@GoogleLabs released Playground that lets you create games with zero coding experience

@unity announced Unity Spark, another AI game dev tooling

@UnrealEngine released a MCP to allow users build with AI tools

and more like this.

The industry is experiencing a massive shift.

In the coming year, I expect standout games from solo developers who would never have shipped anything a few years ago.

What separates a game that exists from a game that matters is no longer just the build. It is distribution: how you find players, and how you keep them. A great game with no audience is just a private demo.

Studios that only optimize for development are already behind. Shipping the game, and keeping people in it, is now the harder problem. I mean it always has been, only now the bar is higher.
