Can you really build a video game using AI?

Yes. But it’s nowhere near as easy as people make it sound. At least, not yet.

I’ve spent the last few weeks building a game using Claude, Unreal Engine 5.8, and the Unreal MCP.

And here’s what I’ve learned.

AI can write code and help build complex gameplay systems, but you still need to understand game development.

You need to know how Unreal Engine works, understand 3D modeling, animation, and rigging. Otherwise, you’ll spend an entire day fighting with AI just to get a character to hold a rifle correctly. Trust me.

You still need to design engaging gameplay loops, balance mechanics, optimize performance, and figure out an AI development pipeline because there really isn’t a playbook for this yet.

But here’s where things get interesting.

I don’t think these limitations will last forever.

I believe we’re entering a period where dedicated solo developers and small teams will start releasing games with the scope and complexity that previously required entire studios.

AI isn’t replacing creativity or good game design. It’s removing barriers between ideas and execution.

And I think that’s going to disrupt the gaming industry in a big way.

Here’s a look at Clanker Wars, the game I’ve been building with these tools.
